War Museum Cambodia: A Unique and Insightful Experience

Updated: Feb 29, 2024

The War Museum Cambodia was established in 2001 in partnership with the Ministry of National Defense on a former landmine field, just off National Road 6 between the city of Siem Reap and the old International Airport. The museum covers an area of more than 2 hectares and displays a collection of tanks, jet fighters, helicopters, artillery guns, landmines, and small arms that were salvaged from various battlefields across the country. Some of these items have even seen action during World War II before being used in Cambodia.

The museum aims to keep the memory of the civil war alive and to preserve the unique collection for posterity. It also serves as a reminder of the horrors of war and the importance of peace and reconciliation.

Activities

One of the main attractions of the museum is the free guided tour that is offered to every visitor. The guides are either war veterans, landmine victims, or eyewitnesses of the war and they can share their firsthand experiences and knowledge about the war and the museum’s collection. You can ask them any questions you have and listen to their stories of survival, bravery, and tragedy.

Another activity that you can enjoy at the museum is holding and posing with some of the small arms, such as the M16, the AK-47, the machine gun, and the rocket launcher. You can also take photos with the war machines and the exhibits as long as you do not climb on them or damage them.

Price

The entrance fee to the museum is $5 per person and it includes the free guided tour. Children under 10 years old can enter for free. The museum also accepts donations to support its operation and maintenance.

How to get there

The museum is located about 7 km from the city center of Siem Reap and about 3 km from the airport. You can easily get there by tuk-tuk, taxi, or bicycle. The journey takes about 15 to 20 minutes depending on the traffic. The museum has a signboard on the main road and a parking lot for vehicles.

How to book

You do not need to book in advance to visit the museum. You can just show up at the entrance and buy your ticket. The museum is open every day from 8 am to 5:30 pm.
